What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of writing and marking up web content so that answer engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google’s AI Overviews and voice assistants, can extract it and quote it as the answer. Where SEO asks “will this page rank?”, AEO asks “will this sentence be cited?”
That difference matters because more buyers now ask a question and read one generated answer, rather than scanning ten links. If your business isn’t in that answer, you aren’t in the conversation.
How answer engines choose what to quote
Answer engines favour content that is easy to lift out and easy to trust. In practice that means four signals:
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
They aren’t competitors, they’re layers. SEO earns the visit, AEO earns the quote, GEO earns the mention inside generated answers.
Five changes to make your pages quotable
- 01 Turn headings into questionsUse the words customers actually type: “How much does a WordPress site cost in Chennai?” rather than “Pricing”.
- 02 Answer in the first two sentencesPut the fact first, then the nuance. Answer engines lift the opening lines.
- 03 Add FAQPage and Service schemaJSON-LD markup tells machines exactly which text answers which question.
- 04 Make your business an entityConsistent name, location and services across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, plus Person and LocalBusiness schema.
- 05 Publish an llms.txt fileA plain summary of your key pages that AI crawlers can read in seconds.
Quick test: paste one of your service pages into ChatGPT and ask it to answer a customer question using only that page. If it struggles, so will every answer engine.
Where to start
Start with the five questions customers ask you most on calls. Give each one a page section with the question as the heading and a two-sentence answer underneath. Mark them up with FAQPage schema, link them from your service pages, and you have the foundation of AEO, on a site you already own.

Frequently asked questions
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. Answer engines still rely on pages that are crawlable, fast and well-structured, so strong SEO remains the foundation.
Structural changes like FAQ sections and schema can be picked up within weeks of being crawled. Being cited consistently depends on how competitive your topic is and how clearly your content answers the question.
Yes, arguably more than large ones. Local, specific questions (“Arabic WordPress developer in Kuwait”) are exactly where a clear, well-marked-up answer from a small business can be the one quoted.
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that summarises your key pages for AI crawlers, similar in spirit to robots.txt and sitemap.xml. It helps assistants find and understand your most important content.
